Wielding the willow from the new third-person perspective is a welcome addition it's far easier to time your shots from directly behind the bat, and watching the ball sail into the member's stand from the batsman's view never stops being anything less than satisfying. While a handful of improvements have been made across the board over last year's Ashes Cricket 2009, those most immediately noticeable are the visual changes – the players no longer look as though they've had a permanent big head cheat mode inflicted upon them, and the new over-the-shoulder 'action cam' provides an experience more akin to actually being out in the middle than the typical television broadcast view can impart - although it's arguably better suited to batting than it is to bowling. But that's not to say it's pitch perfect. Codemasters has been the most consistent producer of cricket titles over the years, and with Aussie developer Trickstar Games it's delivered the best bat and ball sim available on current consoles in International Cricket 2010. How many other sporting disciplines rely so heavily on the density of moisture in the air, the weathering condition of the ball or the degradation of the ground it's played on? How many other athletic pursuits have single matches that can potentially last as long as the typical working week? How many other ball games afford you enough time to drink your entire bodyweight in beer before they've even tossed the coin?Ĭonsequently translating the nuances of the gentleman's game to the videogame medium has been a long running challenge for game developers – for most it's been a difficult task striking a balance between patience-testing authenticity and pick-up-and-slog fun.
